Giáng Kíết Tường translated to English Read in Vietnamese “A Cup of Tea begins the Talk” (Vietnamese idiom) The human body is constantly exposed to microorganisms that readily threaten to bring on disease and succumb one’s health to a harmful state. By drinking tea often, one can improve one’s own immune system to the point that minor viral infestations and infections can practically be eliminated and prevented. For those who are not used to sipping tea and know of its benefit, just try to drink about 3 to 4 glasses of tea per day for two straight weeks would be enough to boost up the immune system and fight against the common colds much easier than those who do not drink tea at all. Why is it that tea can do that to the human body, you might ask. Well, many ongoing researches indicate that the astringent and bitter polyphenolic compound called Tannin found in tea is the culprit. Tannin (from the German root tanna, meaning demon) comes in contact with the liver cells to convert to Eslamin. Both of these by-products of tea are stimulators to the immune system; they are capable of fighting off parasitic organisms, impeding cancer-causing viruses, as well as increasing the immunologic cells and resistant ability of the body. These compounds are found not only from all kinds of teas – including Black, Green, Oolong teas – but can also be detected in many green-leaf vegetables, and red wine made from grapes. The current research at the Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts, USA focused heavily on the actions of T-cells (T lymphocytes) in our immune system, in the tea-drinking subjects vs. those who don’t care for it at all. The T lymphocytes are known for their immune fighting capability; they prevent the onset of and slow down the process of diseases. Researchers harvested these T-lymphs in vitro and boosted them up with Eslamin. The astounding results showed that T-lymphs before bathing in Eslamin tend to be nonchalant to the invading viruses, while those T-cells that were doused with Eslamin produce tons of chemical compounds that vigorously attack the viruses. Afterwards these procedures were carried out in vivo, where researchers noticed that people who drink tea every day during the two weeks of the testing, their T-lymphocytes produce plenty of proteins capable of resisting and defying disease-causing organisms. These researchers also indicated that many other previous researches from other people gave similar results: that through contact with the natural chemical compound Eslamin found in tea, the human body T-lymphocytes are more capable of resisting invading microorganisms, and preventing disease. While all of us are always trying our best to come up with ways to be healthier, to have less infections and colds, to surrender to fewer diseases and illnesses… why not just enjoy a cup of tea every day… so that you can improve your own immune system to desist and impede sickness and poor health. Researchers also suggested that older individuals really need to drink more tea than younger folks. Thusly said, even though tea-drinking people can also contract illnesses and catch colds, but it seems that the duration of their down-time is usually shorter, and the prognosis to their disease is often brighter, just because they are regular tea drinkers. But it doesn’t mean that tea drinkers wouldn’t be sick, and once sick, they could recover on their own. It is always wise to seek medical attention for any illness and take medication as indicated. Tea is only a beneficial drink to one’s health, but is not a replacement for medical treatment and therapeutic management.
